Cape Coral Museum of History

Lee County · Gulf Coast

The city museum at 544 Cultural Park Boulevard, in three buildings with more than twenty-five hundred square feet of exhibits.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Cape Coral did not exist before 1957, when the brothers Leonard and Jack Rosen and their Gulf American Land Corporation bought a peninsula of scrub and palmetto and began dredging canals and selling lots, much of it sight unseen to buyers in the north. The city was incorporated in 1970. That is an unusually short and unusually well documented history, and this museum holds most of it. The Gulf American building, put up in 2003, covers the ground from the Calusa and Seminole through the homesteading families to the land sales, with material from Cape Coral Gardens, the Country Club and the Yacht and Tennis Club, all of them attractions the company built to draw prospective buyers down. The Kelly building, added in 2009, takes the story from incorporation onward through the fire service, police, hospital, schools, parks and churches. The Rosen building of 1962 is now the front desk and shop. Up to four temporary exhibitions run each year. Open Wednesday to Friday from eleven until four and Saturday from ten until two
