FLORIDA PLACE TO EXPLORE
Hinson Conservation & Recreation Area
Jackson County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast
Part of the Chipola River Greenway on Highway 73 south of Marianna, managed by the city on state land.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
The city looks after roughly 291 acres here. Three miles of loop trail cross rugged karst above the Chipola River, and the ground is the attraction: limestone bluffs, sinks and caves rather than the flat pine you get across most of the state. Alamo Cave sits eight-tenths of a mile along and is large enough to climb inside. The Ovens, a cave system in the bluffs, has been harder to reach safely since Hurricane Michael came through in 2018. The Florida Trail Association built these trails and stopped maintaining them after that storm. A historic cabin stands in a clearing, a spring-fed tributary runs along the riverbank, and an old railroad bridge on the former Marianna and Blountstown line crosses nearby. A canoe launch puts you on the Chipola. There are picnic tables and no restrooms. It is free, open sunrise to sunset, down a limerock road of 1.1 miles
