ABOUT THIS PLACE

The zoo grew out of a small animal exhibit at the University of Tampa in the 1930s and moved to its present site beside Lowry Park in 1957, when it was called the Tampa Fairyland Zoo. It was closed, rebuilt and reopened in 1988 as a modern zoo, and took the name ZooTampa at Lowry Park in 2018. It covers about 63 acres and keeps more than 1,300 animals, drawing close to a million visitors a year. The Lowry Park Zoological Society, an independent charity, runs it, and it holds accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The grounds are laid out in regions. Safari Africa has elephants, giraffes and rhinoceros, with an aviary and the Ituri Forest section for okapi and pygmy hippopotamus. Asian Gardens holds tigers and orangutans. Wallaroo Station is the children's area, with a small coaster and animals to feed. What sets the place apart is the Florida Wildlife Center. Its manatee hospital treats injured, sick and orphaned manatees for the state and federal wildlife agencies and returns them to the wild, and it is the only nonprofit critical care hospital of its kind anywhere
