Tampa Riverwalk

Hillsborough County · Gulf Coast

A 2.6-mile paved path along the Hillsborough River that ties downtown Tampa's parks, museums and restaurants into one walk.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Mayor Bill Poe first proposed a public walkway along the river in the 1970s, and it took until 2016 for the pieces to be joined into a continuous route. The finished path runs about 2.6 miles from the Channel District at the south end to Tampa Heights at the north, tracing the east bank of the Hillsborough River and crossing on bridges where it has to. Walking it end to end takes roughly an hour at an easy pace, and there is shade in stretches and none in others. Almost everything downtown worth a halt sits on it or within a block: Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, the Tampa Museum of Art, the Glazer Children's Museum, the Tampa Bay History Center, Sparkman Wharf, the Straz Center for the Performing Arts and Water Works Park. Bronze busts set along the railing mark people from the region's history, part of a monument trail placed by the Tampa Historical Society. A lenticular mural called Woven Waves was added in 2016. The TECO Line Streetcar runs parallel for part of the route and costs nothing to ride, so a visitor can walk one direction and ride back
