FLORIDA PLACE TO EXPLORE

Boyett's Grove & Citrus Attraction

Hernando County · Gulf Coast

A 1960s roadside fruit stand at Brooksville that grew into a citrus shop, an ice cream parlor, an aviary and a dinosaur cave.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Boyett's began in the 1960s as a fruit stand on the Spring Lake Highway where local people and visitors driving down from the north could stop for citrus straight off the grove. It is still doing that: oranges, grapefruit, tangerines, kumquats and more, in season from November through May, with gift fruit shipped and citrus trees for sale. What grew up around it is the reason to stop. There is an old-fashioned gift shop full of Florida souvenirs, an ice cream parlor serving hand-dipped ice cream and cane-sweetened soda, and an art gallery showing the work of James Oleson. Behind that is a small wildlife park with animals that can be fed, an aviary, aquariums of Gulf fish, a dinosaur cave, a gold-panning setup called the DinoMight Gold Mine and miniature golf. It is the kind of roadside place that was once all over Florida and has mostly gone. It is at 4355 Spring Lake Highway in Brooksville and opens seven days a week from 10 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon
