Florida Mermaid Trail

Hernando County · Gulf Coast

Twenty-one mermaid sculptures placed through historic downtown Brooksville, free to walk, sunrise to sunset.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The Florida Mermaid Trail is a walking tour through historic downtown Brooksville with 21 mermaid sculptures set along it, all illustrated by the artist Lee Middleton. They are a nod to the mermaids who have performed underwater at Weeki Wachee Springs since 1947, which is the thing this county is known for worldwide. Each mermaid was placed at a particular spot for a reason, whether the view from it, the architecture behind it or what happened there, so the trail doubles as a tour of the old part of town. It is set up as a scavenger hunt: people work their way around finding all 21 and photograph them as they go. Start at the Brooksville Welcome Center at 205 East Fort Dade Avenue, where paper maps are handed out. There is also a phone app with the route on it, and the map can be looked at online beforehand. The trail is outdoors and open daily from sunrise to sunset. It suits families, it costs nothing, and it works well as something to do either side of a visit to the springs
