Brooksville Railroad Depot Museum

Hernando County · Gulf Coast

An 1885 depot standing where it was built, holding a 1925 fire engine and a restored lumber company box car.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The Brooksville train depot went up in 1885 and has never moved; it stands on the same ground it was built on, which is rare for a building of its kind and age. The arrival of the railway here in 1885 is also the reason the port at Bayport died, because freight that had gone out by water started going out by rail instead. The depot became part of the Plant System in 1902. The old railroad bed it served is now the Good Neighbor Trail. Inside, the museum is laid out in four parts. The office holds the ticket window and the telegraph position. The freight room carries railroad artifacts and HO scale model displays. The enclosed dock has a 1925 fire engine and farm equipment on it. Outside stands a restored Cook Utility Box Car that belonged to the Cummer Sons Cypress Lumber Company. The Hernando Historical Museum Association runs the depot and opens it Friday and Saturday from noon to 3. One thing to know before making the trip: the building is not currently wheelchair accessible
