Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park

Franklin County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast

The empty east end of St. George Island, nine miles of white sand and dune with the Gulf on one side and marsh on the other.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

This park takes up the eastern end of St. George Island, about ten miles southeast of Eastpoint, reached by a four-mile bridge off U.S. 98. It was created in 1963 and is named for Dr. Julian G. Bruce. The Gulf side is white sand and dune, and dolphins work the surf close in. The bay side is healthy salt marsh where wading birds feed and saltwater fish spawn. Between them, nature trails run through scrub and pine holding red-cockaded woodpeckers, bald eagles and five-lined skinks. In summer sea turtles nest on the beach, along with snowy plovers, least terns, willets and black skimmers. Fishing brings in flounder, red snapper and Spanish mackerel. There are two boat ramps, canoe and kayak launches, six picnic shelters with grills, restrooms, showers, a playground, an interpretive exhibit and wheelchair access. Camping runs to 60 developed sites plus two primitive sites reached by a 2.5-mile trail or by paddling, and a primitive group camp; the campground closed for renovation on July 13, 2026, so check before booking. The park is at 1900 East Gulf Beach Drive, opens at 8 in the morning and closes at sunset, and charges per vehicle. It is also a good place to look at stars, because there is very little light out here
