FLORIDA PLACE TO EXPLORE

Gamble Rogers State Recreation Area

Flagler County · Atlantic Coast

A 144-acre park with the ocean on one side and the Intracoastal on the other, named for a folk singer who drowned trying to save a swimmer here.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Gamble Rogers was a Florida folk singer and guitarist. On October 10, 1991, he was camping at Flagler Beach when a Canadian visitor got into trouble in heavy surf and a rip current. Rogers went in after him and both men drowned. The state legislature named this park for him. It covers 144 acres along State Road A1A in Flagler Beach, roughly 18 miles north of Daytona Beach and 30 miles south of St. Augustine, with the Atlantic on one side of the highway and the Intracoastal Waterway on the other, so a visitor gets surf and calm water within a short walk. There are 34 campsites facing the ocean, which is the reason most people book here and the reason they book early. A boat ramp goes into the Intracoastal, and there is a mile-long nature trail, more walking paths, picnic areas and a pavilion. People swim, paddleboard, fish, beachcomb, boat, canoe and watch wildlife. Loggerhead, green and leatherback turtles use the beach from May into early September. The park opens at 8 in the morning and closes at sundown, every day of the year
