Bulow Plantation Ruins Historic State Park

Flagler County · Atlantic Coast

The coquina walls of a sugar mill burned by a Seminole war party in 1836, standing in deep oak woods off Old Kings Road.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Bulow Plantation was established in 1821 and worked 2,200 acres of sugar cane, cotton, rice and indigo, which made it a serious economic force on this coast. Charles Wilhelm Bulow started it and his son John carried it on. More than 200 enslaved people did the work, and a settlement called Bulowville grew up around the operation. The naturalist John James Audubon stayed here at Christmas 1831 and painted his Greater Yellowlegs studies on the property. In 1836, during the Second Seminole War, a Seminole war party burned the plantation to the ground. Nothing was rebuilt. What stands today is the coquina shell of the sugar mill, which from a distance looks like the ruin of a church, along with the spring house, wells, boat slips and the archaeological traces of the slave cabins. A 1.4-mile trail runs between these under a heavy canopy of old live oaks, with interpretive markers at each stop. The park is at 3501 Old Kings Road in Flagler Beach. It opens Thursday through Monday from 9 to 5 and is closed Tuesday and Wednesday. There is a small charge per vehicle, restrooms, a picnic pavilion, a boat ramp on Bulow Creek and canoes for rent
