Duval County · North Florida & First Coast

A Gearing-class destroyer of 1945 tied up at Pier 1 downtown, open to walk through from the deck to the combat information center.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The USS Orleck is a Gearing-class destroyer that served the United States Navy from 1945 to 1982. She is named for Lieutenant Joseph Orleck, who was given the Navy Cross after his death. She now lies at Pier 1, 610 East Bay Street, on the downtown Jacksonville riverfront, and visitors go aboard and walk her. Two parts of her story are built into the tour. In 1952 she became a charter member of the Korean War Train Buster Club by destroying two North Korean supply trains from the sea. In the combat information center a holographic display puts you inside a Cold War encounter with a Russian submarine. At Mount 52 an interactive presentation with lighting and sound recreates a Vietnam mission flown on October 28, 1968. An audio guide can be rented at the ticket booth and leaves both hands free for the ladders. The ship opens Wednesday through Friday from 9 to 3, Saturday from 9 to 4 and Sunday from 10 to 4, and is closed Monday and Tuesday. Parking is free and group tours can be arranged
