ABOUT THIS PLACE

Ninah Cummer left her house, her gardens and her art collection to the city when she died in 1958, and the museum opened on November 11, 1961, as the Cummer Gallery. The permanent collection now runs past 5,000 works and covers a span from 2100 BCE to the present, with real depth in European and American painting; Peter Paul Rubens, Winslow Homer and Norman Rockwell are all represented. The other strength is porcelain. Ralph Wark began collecting Meissen in 1922, built it up past 700 pieces, and he and his sister Constance gave the collection to the Cummer in 1965. Outside, three themed gardens run along the St. Johns River across 1.45 acres. They go back to 1903 and were laid out by the Olmsted Brothers, Ellen Biddle Shipman and Thomas Meehan and Sons, which is an unusual set of names to find on one small piece of ground. The gardens were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. The museum's Art Connections center runs hands-on programs for schoolchildren, including special education students, and the museum draws about 130,000 visitors a year
