MUSEUM & CULTURE

Golisano Children's Museum of Naples

Collier County · South Florida & the Keys

A children's museum of thirty thousand square feet in Naples, built around things a child can climb into.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

It opened in 2002 and is a registered not-for-profit charitable organization, a member of the Association of Children's Museums. The exhibits are hands-on rather than behind glass. A two-story banyan tree stands inside the building and children climb it. There is a journey through the swamps of the Everglades, a maze to weave through, and a water play station where the point is to experiment rather than to look at something. Monthly programming brings in events built around PBS children's shows. What makes a museum like this matter in a county like Collier is the weather: it is where a parent takes small children on the afternoon a thunderstorm clears the beach, and it is built for the ages most museums do not really accommodate. It goes by CMON in local usage, which is how the signs and the listings read, and it is a short drive from the middle of Naples
