PARKS & OUTDOORS
Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park
Collier County · South Florida & the Keys
A barrier island beach park north of Naples, six miles west of Interstate 75.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
The name is made of two halves: the first three letters of Dellora and the first three of Norris, for Dellora A. Norris and Lester J. Norris, who helped buy the land in 1964. The park runs the length of the island with parking spaced down it, so the crowd spreads out instead of piling into one place. Sea turtles nest on this beach through the summer. The gopher tortoise lives in the dry scrub behind the dunes; it is endangered, and it is the only tortoise found east of the Mississippi River. Swimming, sunbathing, shelling and fishing are what people come for, and the pass at the north end runs a strong current that swimmers need to respect. A boat ramp gives access to the back water, and a fishing license is needed in some parts of the park. Entry is six dollars a vehicle with a further five dollars to use the ramp. The gate opens at dawn and closes at sundown, every day of the year
