FLORIDA PLACE TO EXPLORE
Fifth Avenue South
Collier County · South Florida & the Keys
The main street of Naples since the 1920s, running from downtown toward the Gulf.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
Ed Frank's Garage, near Tenth Street, was the first commercial building on it, put up in 1923. The Franks lived above the shop, and Ed Frank built the first swamp buggy there, a machine that is now part of the county's folklore and has a race named after it. For decades after that the avenue was an ordinary small-town main street. In the early 1990s local business owners and civic leaders brought in the urban planner Andres Duany, whose work had already changed how Florida towns were laid out, and the avenue was redesigned around walking rather than parking. What that produced is the street as it stands now: shops, galleries, restaurants with tables out on the sidewalk, and people on foot in the evening. The Sugden Community Theatre opened in the middle of it in 1998 and is home to the Naples Players, which anchored the cultural half of the change. The beach lies at the western end of the street
