FLORIDA PLACE TO EXPLORE
Las Olas Boulevard
Broward County · South Florida & the Keys
The boulevard that runs from downtown Fort Lauderdale out to the ocean, lined with shops, galleries and restaurants.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
Las Olas Boulevard runs from downtown Fort Lauderdale out to the ocean, and its own association calls it the heart of the city. Along it are restaurants, shops, art galleries, museums and independent boutiques, and the street carries on all the way to the beach. It was the road that first connected people arriving in Fort Lauderdale with the sea, and in the association's own words it now connects them with the dining and shopping instead. For anyone looking at Fort Lauderdale as a place to live rather than visit, this is the walkable stretch the city is built around. The name means the waves in Spanish. The street ends at the beach, at the corner where the Elbo Room has stood since 1960, and it begins downtown among the office towers, so a single walk takes in the business district, the galleries and the sand. On the way it crosses the New River and passes the Stranahan House, the oldest building in the city, and the NSU Art Museum, which has the address One East Las Olas. The Water Taxi calls here, so it is possible to arrive by boat
