Cade Museum for Creativity and Invention

Alachua County · North Florida & First Coast

A hands-on invention museum in Gainesville's Depot Park, named for the University of Florida physician who led the team that made Gatorade.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Robert Cade led the University of Florida team that developed Gatorade in 1965, and he held that science and art belong in the same room, a habit he called purposeful creativity. His family set up the Cade Museum Foundation in 2004 and spent thirteen years raising the money. The building opened on May 19, 2018, at 811 South Main Street, on a corner of Depot Park just south of downtown Gainesville. It runs to about 26,000 square feet and cost roughly 9.2 million dollars. One wing belongs to Dr. Cade. It holds his laboratory from the university, an account of how the drink was developed and tested, and oddities from the same work such as water-cooled football shoulder pads. The rest of the museum is built for doing rather than reading. There are fabrication and creativity laboratories where visitors make things, exhibits on inventions that came out of the University of Florida, and a working printing press of the kind Gutenberg used. Plaques on the second floor mark inventors including Nikola Tesla and the man who patented the zipper
