ABOUT THIS PLACE

The Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art opened on September 20, 1990, in the University of Florida's cultural plaza, in the southwest corner of the Gainesville campus, alongside the Florida Museum of Natural History and the performing arts center. The building runs to about 112,800 square feet with 40,400 of that given to exhibition space, and the permanent collection holds more than 11,300 objects. It is organized into five areas: African art reaching back to the fifth century before the common era, Asian art from the Neolithic to the present, modern art from the middle of the nineteenth century into the early twentieth, contemporary art from 1945 onward, and photography from the nineteenth century forward. Two additions shaped what a visitor sees. The Mary Ann Harn Cofrin Pavilion added 18,000 square feet in 2005, and the Asian Art Wing added 26,000 more in 2012, both paid for by the Cofrin family. Outside, an Asian water garden and an Asian rock garden designed by the landscape architect Hoichi Kurisu give the Asian collection a setting rather than just a room
