A nightly rate is not the price of the stay, and a scouting trip has questions a vacation does not.

A riverside house on North Riverside Drive at New Smyrna Beach, with guest rooms named one by one and sleeping two to four. The grounds run to more than an acre and a half of landscaped gardens. The house takes overnight guests and also works as a wedding and event venue, seating up to 150.
A bed and breakfast on South Beach Street in Daytona Beach, in a house added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 8, 1987. It has gone by several names over the years, among them The Abbey, the Foxtail Estate and the Doremus House. There are four guest rooms. Breakfast, wireless internet and linens are included. It also takes weddings.
A fish camp on the Intracoastal Waterway at Oak Hill, in the Mosquito Lagoon. There are 40 full hookup RV sites on 30 and 50 amp with water and sewer, and three furnished rental cabins with air conditioning and televisions that sleep up to five. A 100-foot dock and a fish cleaning station sit by the boat launch, which also sells ice, shrimp and tackle. Pets are welcome and there is a fenced dog park.
A house built in 1908 at Orange City, kept in Victorian style with heart pine floors. There are three themed rooms in the main house plus cottages that sleep two to eight. The whole place can be taken over for weddings, reunions, retreats and private events. The St. Johns River and Blue Spring State Park are three miles away.
Four apartment-style rentals at New Smyrna Beach. Each one has two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a full-size kitchen. The property is on the beachfront, complimentary parking comes with every rental, and the inn's own site says it is pet friendly. With only four units in total, it is a small property rather than a hotel.
An inn with five sleeping rooms on South Palmetto Avenue in historic downtown Daytona Beach. A hot breakfast is included in the nightly rate. The owners took the house on in 2020, finding it behind overgrown shrubbery and vines, and have been restoring it since.
A small five-room property on Oakridge Boulevard in Daytona Beach, a block from the beach. Wireless internet is included and pets are accepted, and there are restaurants within walking distance. Published information on this one is thin, so nothing further is claimed here.
An oceanfront property at Daytona Beach Shores, with guest rooms spread across ten low-rise buildings. There are studios, garden view cottages, one, two and three bedroom suites, and value rooms with a king or two double beds. Most rooms have full kitchens. There is a heated oceanfront pool and a kiddie pool, shuffleboard, and lawns planted with tropical flowers and hand-painted murals. It is family owned and run.

Choose the shortest format that still lets you test ordinary life without racing from one end of Florida to another.
Choose one county and two communities. Use day one for essential routes, day two for neighborhoods and housing, and day three for repeat drives and unresolved questions.
Split the stay between two county areas. Give each finalist two ordinary days, then reserve the final day to revisit the strongest community.
Use two lodging bases rather than crossing the region every day. Compare no more than three counties and protect time for unplanned discoveries.
Leave at the time you would normally travel and use the likely work route.
Drive to the hospital, primary-care area or specialist you expect to use.
Test groceries, pharmacy, fuel and ordinary services—not only dining and attractions.
Measure the full route, parking and realistic departure-time burden.
Check beach, event or tourism traffic when that pattern affects the community.
See lighting, noise, access and neighborhood conditions after dark.
