WATER & COAST

Hillsboro Beach

Broward County · South Florida & the Keys

Three miles of barrier island between the Intracoastal Waterway and the ocean, about 900 feet across at its widest, with one road running the length of it. The town is almost entirely residential: around 2,000 people, about 50 single-family houses, the rest condominiums, one hotel and no commercial property at all. The Hillsboro Lighthouse stands at the inlet, finished in 1907 and 138 feet tall, and the preservation society runs tours on a limited basis. The town protects a high concentration of sea turtle nests.
