How do I get a marriage license in Florida?

Apply together, in person, at any county Clerk of Court, each with a state-issued photo ID, military ID or passport, and know your Social Security numbers and, if either of you was married before, the exact date that marriage ended.

Brevard and Miami-Dade charge $86, or $61 with a premarital course certificate. For Florida residents the license takes effect 3 days after you apply, unless you have both finished a premarital preparation course of at least 4 hours with a provider registered with the clerk; then there is no wait. Couples who do not live in Florida have no wait. The license is good for 60 days.

An ordained minister or other ordained clergy, a judge, a clerk of court, or a Florida notary public may perform the ceremony; the Miami-Dade clerk's office performs ceremonies for $30.

On the beach, the rules belong to the county or city. Volusia County needs a special event permit only for 50 people or more; for fewer, notify Beach Safety, with no fee or insurance. Pinellas County needs a wedding or special event application at least 90 days ahead. Miami Beach needs a special events permit for events on public property. Ask the county or city where the beach is.
