What benefits do veterans get in Florida?

A veteran with a service-connected total and permanent disability pays no property tax on the homestead, and there are other property tax breaks for veterans, in the answer on them.

A Veteran designation on the Florida driver license or ID card is free: bring a DD Form 214, a VA health identification card or a VA veteran identification card, and a replacement license only to add it costs nothing. A 100 percent disabled veteran can get a DV license plate at no charge, and the state offers many military specialty plates.

Florida State Parks give veterans 25 percent off annual passes, and veterans with service-connected disabilities a free lifetime family pass. A Florida resident veteran with a service-connected disability of 50 percent or more gets a free 5-year hunting and fishing license. An honorably discharged veteran who lives in Florida while enrolled pays in-state tuition at the state's colleges and universities.

The state runs nine veterans' homes: skilled nursing homes in Daytona Beach, Land O' Lakes, Pembroke Pines, Panama City, Port Charlotte, St. Augustine, Port St. Lucie and Orlando, and an assisted living domiciliary in Lake City, for veterans with an honorable discharge who lived in Florida before admission. Each county's veteran service office helps with claims free of charge. The Florida Veterans Support Line is 1-844-MyFLVet (1-844-693-5838); in a crisis, call 988 and press 1.
