When is flounder season in Florida?

Flounder may be kept for most of the year, but every year the harvest closes statewide from October 15 through November 30 and reopens on December 1.

The wildlife commission says the closure protects flounder while they gather before spawning, and southern flounder are thought to spawn offshore. When it is open, a flounder must be at least 14 inches long and the limit is five per person a day, in state and federal waters off Florida. The rule covers Gulf, southern, summer and fringed flounder alike. Unlike most fish, flounder may be taken with a gig or a spear as well as with hook and line, a cast net or a seine. Multiple hooks with natural bait, and snatching, are not allowed. Southern flounder live in brackish bays and estuaries and range up tidal creeks into fresh water. A saltwater license applies unless you are exempt.
