How do I get a public library card in Florida?

You get a Florida library card from the public library system that serves where you live, and each system sets its own rules on who qualifies.

Florida's library systems include county, city, regional and cooperative systems. Two examples:

Miami-Dade Public Library System. It serves most of Miami-Dade County from 50 library locations. Cards are free for most county residents of any age, and residents of Hialeah, Homestead, North Miami and North Miami Beach get free cards through reciprocal borrowing. Bring one ID, such as a driver's license or state ID, a military ID or a passport, plus one current proof of address, such as a utility bill, a property tax receipt or a mortgage statement. A statement must be no more than two months old. Children 15 and under need a parent's permission. Apply online or in person at any location. The card lends books, e-books, e-audiobooks, video games, Wi-Fi hotspots and Chromebooks. The system no longer sells cards to people who live outside the county. Call the Main Library's general information line, 305-375-2665, or email CustomerCare@mdpls.org.

Martin County Library System. Cards are free to anyone who lives, works or goes to school in Martin County, and a card works at any branch in the county. Bring a photo ID plus one proof, such as a Martin County address on the ID, a county voter registration card, or a lease or utility bill with your name and a Martin County address. People who do not qualify can buy a Guest Card at a library, $50 for one year. A free computer-only card gives use of library computers but no borrowing. Children under 16 need a parent or guardian to get a card. Martin County government's main number is 772-288-5400.
