Are there wild flamingos in Florida?

Yes, and more of them lately. American flamingos were native to Florida, gathering by the hundreds and thousands in the Everglades and Florida Bay, until the feather trade of the late 1800s nearly wiped them out.

In August 2023 Hurricane Idalia carried hundreds of them into Florida and across the eastern United States, and some stayed. A survey in February 2024 counted at least 100 flamingos in the state, and 125 were seen together in Florida Bay in July 2025. Florida Bay, on the southern edge of Everglades National Park, is where they gather now. Scientists credit Everglades restoration, which has improved the water there, as one reason they may be back for good.
