Can you drink alcohol on the beach in Florida?

It depends on the beach, because each city and county sets its own rule, and Florida's state parks and several beach cities do not allow it.

Florida State Parks do not allow drinking in public places in the parks, and that includes beaches, tubing and paddling areas, and first-come picnic areas. People 21 and older may drink only at a reserved campsite, cabin, yurt or lodge room; at a reserved pavilion or hall where the rental contract notes alcohol; at a park restaurant or lodge licensed to sell it; or at a special event the park has approved.

Some city and county rules:

Miami Beach says alcohol and smoking are always prohibited on city beaches, and glass containers are not allowed.

Fort Lauderdale's beach rules say alcoholic beverages are prohibited on the beach, and so are glass bottles and glass containers. The city's customer service line is (954) 828-8000.

Panama City Beach has a city ordinance, No. 1353, prohibiting alcohol on the sandy Gulf beach during March.

Volusia County's Beach Safety division, on its special event application, lists as beach rules under county ordinance that alcohol and glass containers are not allowed; an event that wants alcohol on the beach needs County Council approval. Volusia County Beach Safety is at (386) 239-6414.

Rules differ from one beach to the next, so check with the city or county that runs the beach before you bring a cooler.
