ABOUT THIS PLACE

The tower went up in 1874 and the keepers' house followed in 1876, and both stand at 100 Red Cox Drive on Anastasia Island. Climbing it means 219 steps up a spiral staircase to a gallery with a view over the whole of St. Augustine, the inlet and the Atlantic. The Victorian keepers' house below holds the museum. What sets this place apart from other lighthouse museums is that it runs a maritime archaeology program of its own, searching for and excavating shipwrecks off this coast and conserving what comes up. The exhibition called Wrecked! shows artifacts from the American Revolution, and the education center has a conservation lab where visitors can watch the work being done. Volunteer boatwrights in the Heritage Boatworks have built over nineteen wooden boats by hand since 2007, from rowboats to sailing craft. Ghost tours run at night, including investigations that combine the grounds with a tower climb. It opens daily from nine to six
