St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park

St. Johns County · Atlantic Coast

Open since 1893 and the first place in the world to show every living species of crocodilian, on Anastasia Island.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The attraction opened on May 20, 1893, at a beach railway station, where a few alligators were added to help sell souvenirs. The alligators turned out to be the draw, and the business moved to its present site on Anastasia Island in the early 1920s. It is one of the oldest continuously operating attractions in Florida. In 1993, its hundredth year, it became the first place anywhere to display every species of crocodilian then known, and it keeps 24 of them along with other reptiles, mammals and birds. It holds accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and was listed as a United States historic district in September 1992. The back of the property is a natural wading bird rookery, where herons, egrets, spoonbills and storks nest in the trees over the alligator swamp because the alligators keep the raccoons away. Photographers come for that in spring. A zip line runs over the park
