FLORIDA PLACE TO EXPLORE

Palatka Mural Tour

Putnam County · North Florida & First Coast

More than thirty painted murals across downtown Palatka, telling the town's river history on the walls of its buildings.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Palatka calls itself the City of Murals, and the claim is earned: more than thirty painted walls are spread through the town, most of them in and around the historic downtown between the two National Register districts. They are not decoration so much as a record. The subjects are the town's own history, and the river runs through most of them: the steamboat era, when Palatka was a working port and a winter resort with hotels along the St. Johns; the waterfront as it looked when the boats were still coming; the citrus and timber trades that used the landings. One mural shows Annie Oakley, who came to Palatka in 1891 to give shooting demonstrations for Remington. The Conlee-Snyder Mural Committee organizes the program and keeps a list of the walls and where to find them. The murals are outdoors, free and visible at any hour, and seeing most of them is an easy walk of an hour or two
