Lake Mirror

Polk County · Central Florida

The lake at the center of downtown Lakeland, ringed by a 1928 classical promenade on the National Register of Historic Places.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Lake Mirror is the civic heart of Lakeland, and the structure around it is the reason it is on the National Register. The Frances Langford Promenade was built in two phases between 1926 and 1928, designed by Charles Wellford Leavitt of New York with H. B. Trauger, in Classical Revival style: a long colonnade, a balustrade along the water and broad steps down to it. It runs between Lemon Street and Lake Mirror Drive and went on the National Register on January 27, 1983. In 1946 the city dedicated it to Frances Langford, a Lakeland native who sang and acted and spent much of the war touring for the USO, and the commemorative signs were reinstalled at a re-dedication in 2013. Hollis Garden sits at one end of the promenade. A walking path circles the water, the Lake Mirror Classic car show fills the surrounding streets each fall, and the downtown begins a block away
