FLORIDA PLACE TO EXPLORE
Frank Lloyd Wright at Florida Southern College
Polk County · Central Florida
The largest collection of Frank Lloyd Wright buildings anywhere, thirteen of them on a working college campus in Lakeland.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
President Ludd M. Spivey hired Frank Lloyd Wright in 1938 to lay out a new campus for Florida Southern College, and Wright built twelve structures here between 1941 and 1958. A thirteenth, a Usonian house Wright designed but never built, was completed in 2013. No other place holds as many of his buildings. He based the plan on the grid of an orange grove and used textile block construction, standardized concrete blocks cast from local sand, some of them made by students who could not otherwise pay their fees. The Annie Pfeiffer Chapel of 1941 was the first finished. The Water Dome was partly built in 1949 and restored to his specification in 2007. Covered walkways he called Esplanades link the buildings and are still being repaired. The district went on the National Register in 1975 and became a National Historic Landmark on March 2, 2012. The Sharp Family Tourism and Education Center runs tours daily
