Loggerhead Marinelife Center

Palm Beach County · South Florida & the Keys

The only sea turtle hospital between Orlando and the Florida Keys, free to visit, started by a Juno Beach real estate agent who wondered why hatchlings crawled the wrong way.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Loggerhead Marinelife Center began with Eleanor Fletcher, who ran a Juno Beach real estate business and noticed how many turtles nested on the shore in front of it. She wanted to know why so many hatchlings headed landward instead of out to sea, began some of the earliest turtle research on this coast, and became known locally as the Turtle Lady. What she started was incorporated in 1983 as the Children's Museum of Juno Beach, in an old house in Loggerhead Park, renamed in 1990, and moved in 2007 into the 12,000-square-foot building it occupies now, which holds a full veterinary hospital, an exhibit hall, a research lab and an outdoor classroom. It is the only sea turtle hospital between Orlando and the Florida Keys, and admission is free. The center stands in Loggerhead Park at Juno Beach, on the same shore Fletcher was watching, and the hospital treats animals brought in from that beach and from a long way beyond it. Patients recover in outdoor tanks in view of the public rather than out of sight, so what a visitor sees is the actual work
