FLORIDA PLACE TO EXPLORE
Southernmost Point
Monroe County · South Florida & the Keys
A painted concrete marker at the corner of South and Whitehead Streets, put there by the city on September 10, 1983.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
It is made from a concrete sewer junction, which is worth knowing before lining up for a photograph, and the line can be long. The wording says ninety miles to Cuba. The nearest point of Cuba is about ninety-four statute miles away; ninety nautical miles, which is a hundred and four statute miles, is roughly the distance to Havana, so the figure is defensible as a round number rather than a measurement. It is also not the southernmost point of anything much. Fort Zachary Taylor lies about five hundred feet further south, and the true southernmost land in the continental United States is Ballast Key, some ten miles away. Hurricane Irma stripped the paint in 2017 and the original artist Danny Acosta restored it; it was badly vandalized on New Year's Day 2022. In September 2025 a duplicate was set up nearby while the seawall beneath the original was repaired. The city gives the address as 1499 Duval Street, at the point where Duval runs out at the water. There is no charge and no gate; it is a marker on a street corner, open at any hour, and going early in the morning avoids both the line and the light. The city number is 305-809-3945
