FLORIDA PLACE TO EXPLORE
Duval Street
Monroe County · South Florida & the Keys
The main street of Key West, running just over a mile and a quarter from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
It is named for William Pope Duval, the first territorial governor of Florida, and the American Planning Association named it a Great Street in 2012. The two ends are not alike. The northern end, near Mallory Square, handles the cruise ship trade with shops, bars and restaurants, and includes Sloppy Joe's and Margaritaville. Walk south and it quiets into Victorian houses and small shops, many of them Bahamian and Spanish influenced mansions that survived because preservation began here in the 1960s; a National Park Service survey in 1967 identified eighteen historic buildings and six blocks went on the National Register in 1971. Cubans began arriving in the late 1860s and Key West was called Cigar City for a time; the San Carlos Institute, founded in 1871, still stands on the street as a Cuban cultural center. The pub crawl along its length is an institution and the street closes for Fantasy Fest
