Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail

Hendry County · South Florida & the Keys

A trail running the crown of the Herbert Hoover Dike, with the lake on one side and cane fields on the other.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail runs along the crown of the Herbert Hoover Dike, the forty-foot earth wall built around Lake Okeechobee after the hurricanes of 1926 and 1928. Those two storms are the reason for everything here: in 1926 the levee on the west side gave way and about 300 people died around Moore Haven, and in 1928 at least 2,500 died. The Army Corps of Engineers finished an eighteen-year rehabilitation of the dike in January 2023 at a cost of 1.5 billion dollars. Walking or riding along it puts you above the flat country, with the lake spread out on one side and sugar cane, pasture and small towns on the other, and very little shade on either. The Hendry County stretch runs along the south shore past Clewiston. The lake itself covers roughly 730 square miles and averages about nine feet deep, and the five counties around it, Hendry among them, all meet at a single point out in the water. Take water and a hat; there is nothing between you and the sun up there
