Clewiston Museum

Hendry County · South Florida & the Keys

A town museum at 109 Central Avenue covering sugar, cattle, commercial fishing, hurricanes and the British pilots who trained here.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The Clewiston Museum sits at 109 Central Avenue in Clewiston and covers a surprising spread of subjects for a building this size. The exhibits run to fossils, the sugar industry, the cattle business, commercial fishing on Lake Okeechobee, the hurricanes that shaped this shore, the Seminole people, and what the museum files under Flying Brits. That last one is the piece visitors do not expect: British pilots came to this part of Florida to train during the Second World War, a long way from home and in weather nothing like it. Sugar gets the most room, with a full display on how cane is planted, harvested and processed, which is the industry this town was built around and still runs on. A 60-seat theater shows films on local history and agriculture. Clewiston sits on the south shore of Lake Okeechobee behind the Herbert Hoover Dike, and the hurricane material explains why that dike exists: the 1928 storm killed at least 2,500 people around this lake. The museum is the place to understand the town before driving out to look at the cane fields or the lake
