Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park

Duval County · North Florida & First Coast

A 447-acre city park at Mayport with a mile and a half of beach, a 40-acre lake and nearly fifteen miles of mountain bike trail.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park sits at Mayport in Jacksonville and covers 447 acres, with a beach a mile and a half long. Winthrop Bancroft gave the land in 1967 on the condition that it carry the name of Kathryn Abbey Hanna, a Chicago-born educator and author who had settled in Florida, taught at Florida State College for Women and written a state history called Florida, Land of Change. The park protects coastal hammock, which has become rare along a developed Atlantic coast, and boardwalks keep feet off the dune plants. Riders come here for close to fifteen miles of mountain bike trail graded by difficulty, with the harder routes carrying names like Grunt, Misery and Tornado Alley. A 40-acre freshwater lake, opened in 1978, takes fishing, kayaks, canoes and paddle boats. There are nearly 300 campsites for tents and recreational vehicles and six log cabins, along with a visitor center, playgrounds, picnic areas, volleyball and shuffleboard courts and the Dolphin Plaza building on the beach. Part of the park was once Manhattan Beach, the first beach community in Florida for Black families under segregation, which lasted until the railway stopped running to it in 1932. About 400,000 people come each year
