PARKS & OUTDOORS
Moccasin Slough Park
Clay County · North Florida & First Coast
A 255-acre county park on Fleming Island, with woodland trails, a fitness circuit and a playground.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
Moccasin Slough Park covers 255 acres on Fleming Island, off Highway 17 at Raggedy Point Road. Most of it is left as it is: woods, wetland and the slough the park is named for. The county has built enough around the edges to make the property easy to use. There is a playground, a covered pavilion for gatherings, picnic tables, benches, restrooms, shade and parking, and the grounds are fenced. Several trails run through the property, and one of them has eight fitness stations spaced along the path, so a walk can be turned into a workout without carrying any equipment. Clay County has also started running free guided hikes here, so people who do not know the property can be shown what is in it. The county's advice for those walks tells you what the ground is like in summer: bring water, wear proper shoes and carry insect repellent. There is no charge to come in. For families on Fleming Island it works as a park for an hour after school. For anyone else it is a quiet piece of Clay County woods and water a few minutes off Highway 17, with room to walk further than most neighborhood parks allow
