Hollywood Beach Broadwalk

Broward County · South Florida & the Keys

Two and a half miles of oceanfront promenade at Hollywood, thirty feet wide and closed to cars.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Joseph Young bought the land in 1921 and set out to build what he called the Atlantic City of south Florida. The first stretch, a mile and a half of it, was finished by 1923. The Great Hurricane of September 18, 1926, killed hundreds of people along this coast and took Young's company into bankruptcy, and his investors lost heavily. The promenade itself survived. A beach master plan adopted in 2007 created a historic district and rebuilt the walk, adding restrooms, palm trees and an accessible shower, and marking separate lanes for walking, jogging and cycling so that the three do not collide. Ninety-eight small hotels stand along it, which is why this stretch feels different from the high-rise coast north and south of it. Three oceanfront parks, restaurants and shops line the route. The historic bandshell, opposite the Johnson Street end, puts on live music and outdoor concerts. It is spelled Broadwalk rather than boardwalk, and has been since Young's day
