PARKS & OUTDOORS
San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park
Alachua County · North Florida & First Coast
A mature hardwood hammock holding eighteen natural communities, with separate trailheads for walkers and for riders.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
San Felasco is a mature hardwood forest, which is unusual enough in this part of Florida to be the reason the place was protected. Eighteen distinct natural communities have been recorded inside the preserve. The ground is not flat: limestone breaks the surface and the land rises and falls, and that variation is what supports the range of hardwoods growing here, among them trees recorded as champions of their species. Bobcats, white-tailed deer, gray foxes and wild turkeys live in the preserve, along with a long list of songbirds, and the state names birding as one of the reasons to come. There are two ways in and they are not the same. The North Trailhead takes walkers, off-road cyclists and horse riders. The South Trailhead is for walking only. The preserve covers about 6,500 acres northwest of Gainesville on County Road 232, Millhopper Road, just south of the town of Alachua. Around sixty-five miles of single-track run through it for walkers, bicycles and horses together. The gate opens at eight in the morning and closes at sundown, every day of the year
