WATER & COAST

Siesta Beach

Sarasota County · Gulf Coast

A wide beach on Siesta Key whose sand is 99 percent quartz, which is why it stays cool underfoot in August.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The sand here is about 99 percent quartz, ground down from the Appalachian Mountains and washed south over a very long time. Quartz reflects heat rather than holding it, so even on the hottest afternoon the dry sand is walkable barefoot, which is not true of most beaches in Florida. It is also unusually wide, wide enough that the county lays walking mats across it so people can reach the firm wet sand without crossing a hundred yards of soft ground. TripAdvisor placed it sixth among beaches in the United States in its 2026 travelers' choice list, after first place in the country and fourth in the world in 2025, and it has taken that first place more than once since 2015. Siesta Key was called Clam Island before the twentieth century and stayed cut off until bridges reached it in 1917 and 1927. The pavilion at the main access has concessions, restrooms and a large parking lot, and a drum circle gathers near the water on Sunday evenings
