WATER & COAST
Camp Helen State Park Beach
Bay County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast
A 180-acre day-use park with the Gulf on one side and Lake Powell on the other, the largest coastal dune lake in Florida. Fishing in both the fresh water and the salt. From 1945 to 1987 this was a resort for Avondale Mills employees, and the restored lodge and the rainbow cottages from the 1930s are still standing; the park is on the National Register of Historic Places. Nature trails run through several different plant communities. Restrooms, showers, parking, picnic pavilions, a visitor center and a mobility mat down to the sand. Open 8 a.m. to sunset, $4 a vehicle or $2 on foot or by bicycle, into an honor box.
