Yes, more than anywhere else in the country. In the National Weather Service's count from 1959 to 2004, Florida had 2,117 people killed or injured by lightning, more than twice North Carolina, which was second with 818.
Most lightning deaths come from May through September, during the wet season, and July and August are the worst months. The Weather Service's rule is short: there is no safe place outside when a thunderstorm is in the area, so when thunder roars, go indoors. A substantial building or a hard-topped vehicle is safe; a rain shelter, a small shed or an open vehicle is not. Wait 30 minutes after the last lightning or thunder before going back out. On the beach, on the water or on a golf course, that means leaving at the first thunder, not the first rain.
