Venice Museum & Archives

Sarasota County · Gulf Coast

The city of Venice's museum and archive, in the 1927 Triangle Inn, a Mission Revival rooming house moved and restored.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The Triangle Inn went up in 1927 in the Mission and Spanish Revival style that the city of Venice was built in, and Mrs. Augusta Miner ran it as a rooming house. The building was moved to 351 South Nassau Street and restored, and it went on the National Register of Historic Places on February 23, 1996. It now holds the Venice Museum and Archives, run by the City of Venice. The subject is the town itself, which is an unusually interesting one: Venice was laid out in the 1920s by John Nolen, one of the first city planners in the country, for the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, and the whole street pattern and building style came from that single plan. The Kentucky Military Institute wintered here for decades, and the circus wintered here after Sarasota. The archive holds photographs, documents, maps and oral histories, and the staff handle research requests about local families and buildings
