Air Force Armament Museum

Okaloosa County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast

A free museum of Air Force weapons and the aircraft that carried them, outside the gate of Eglin Air Force Base.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The Air Force Armament Museum stands at 100 Museum Drive, outside the Eglin Air Force Base gate, so no base pass is needed to visit. About 45 aircraft are parked in the outdoor airpark, among them an SR-71 Blackbird, a B-52 and a B-17, and the building holds bombs, missiles, guided munitions and a vault of more than 180 guns from the Civil War to the present. Admission is free. The museum first opened on June 22, 1974, in a converted 1940s chapel, closed in 1981 when that building was condemned, and reopened on November 15, 1985, in the twenty-thousand-square-foot building it uses now, paid for entirely by private donation. The Air Force Armament Museum Foundation, a private nonprofit, supports it. The weapons are the part that surprises people: the GBU-43, the bomb usually called the Mother of All Bombs and the largest conventional explosive weapon there is, a T-12 Cloudmaker earthquake bomb, a Fat Man casing, and a GAU-8 rotary cannon that fires six thousand rounds a minute. The Sikes Antique Pistol Collection holds more than 180 handguns. The B-52G outside is named El Lobo II. Fighters on the field include an F-15E Strike Eagle, an A-10A Thunderbolt, an F-16A and a MiG-21. An education program called Engineers for America takes school groups through engineering experiments
