Appleton Museum of Art

Marion County · Central Florida

A two-story museum faced in Italian travertine at 4333 East Silver Springs Boulevard, Ocala, holding more than twenty-four thousand works.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Arthur I. Appleton, a Chicago industrialist who bred horses in Marion County, built it with his wife Martha O'Driscoll and opened it to the public in 1987. Eighty thousand square feet of travertine marble clads the building inside and out, and the floors are Bolivian granite, which for a city the size of Ocala is an extraordinary thing to have been given. There are eight permanent collections. European work runs from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries. The pre-Columbian holdings cover Maya, Wari and Moche cultures; the Asian rooms hold Buddha sculptures, Chinese ceramics and Japanese netsuke; the African collection includes Baga and Igbo pieces from West Africa. There are also modern and contemporary galleries from the 1950s onward, a maritime collection of historic sailing ships, a Florida artists collection, and an equine collection spanning more than three thousand years, which belongs in horse country. The College of Central Florida has governed the museum since 2004, and it was accredited by the American Alliance of Museums in 2013
