QUESTIONS THAT NAME THIS PLACE

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The four are Lovers Key, Black Island, Inner Key and Long Key, and until 1965 the first of them could only be reached by boat, which is where the name came from. Two miles of beach run along the Gulf side, reached by a footbridge or by a free tram from the parking lot. Behind the beach the mangrove creeks are quiet water for kayaking, with manatees and dolphins working through them and roseate spoonbills, ospreys and bald eagles overhead. Black Island carries several miles of trail and the discovery building, which explains what lives in the estuary. Hurricane Ian struck on September 28, 2022, with a storm surge estimated at fifteen to eighteen feet and took the park apart; rebuilding has been long and the facilities have reopened in stages, so it is sensible to check what is running before setting out. Canoes, kayaks and paddleboards are rented on site. The park opens from eight in the morning until sundown all year, and the entrance fee is charged per vehicle
