Veterans Memorial Park Jasper
Hamilton County · North Florida & First Coast
Two and a half acres on U.S. 41 in front of the courthouse annex, with a granite wall of honor and engraved bricks from the Civil War forward.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
Hamilton County has roughly 1,300 veterans, and this park was built for them on 2.5 acres along U.S. 41 in Jasper, in front of the courthouse annex. Sergeant Major Clay Lambert, a retired Marine and the county's veterans service officer, led the project. The ground is laid with engraved memorial bricks bought by families, each carrying a name and a service. By March 2014, when a public brick-laying day drew a large crowd, 277 had been sold, and they cover every branch and every conflict from the Civil War to the present. Once the bricks are set, sand is swept into the joints and the surface sealed. The park was dedicated on Memorial Day that year. The centerpiece is a granite Memorial Wall of Honor, twenty feet long and five feet high. Around it are a covered pavilion with a raised stage for speakers, sidewalks, an accessible entrance, a wrought iron gate and lighting at the front, and walking paths with memorial plaques and benches. It is an ordinary small-town park in the sense that anyone can walk in, and the local Memorial Day and Veterans Day services are held here
