Historic Downtown Starke

Bradford County · North Florida & First Coast

Twenty-three historic buildings along Call Street, including an art deco cinema run by the same family since 1941.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Downtown Starke holds 23 historic buildings along the Call Street district. The Florida Twin Theater stands at the circular brick intersection of East Call and Walnut Streets, art deco with neon, family owned and operated since 1941, and it still shows films. The Bradford County Telegraph has been publishing since 1893 and its office is here. The old county courthouse with its clock tower and the old county bank with its heavy columns are both on the street. What fills the rest of it is ordinary and open: Tony and Al's Deli, Sapp Station Coffee, the Call Street Cafe, Dink's Place for frozen yogurt, and Powell's Dairy Freeze, an ice cream stand that still serves people in their cars. The Call Street Historic District went on the National Register of Historic Places on December 12, 1985, bounded by Jefferson, Cherry, Madison and Temple Streets, with one structure counted alongside the buildings. The oldest of them dates to 1858. Call Street is part of State Road 230 and takes its name from Richard K. Call, a territorial governor of Florida. The Santa Fe College Andrews Center, on the same street, is separately listed on the National Register
