WATER & COAST
Navarre Beach
Santa Rosa County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast
A quiet stretch of Santa Rosa Island between two national seashore boundaries, with the longest fishing pier in Florida on it.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
Navarre Beach sits on Santa Rosa Island with Gulf Islands National Seashore on both sides of it, which is the reason it stays quieter than Pensacola Beach or Destin: there is nowhere for the development to spread. The sand is the fine white quartz that came down from the Appalachians and gives this coast its color, and the water is the clear green the Panhandle is known for. The fishing pier runs 1,545 feet into the Gulf, the longest in Florida and the fifteenth longest public pier in the country. Hurricane Ivan destroyed the original wooden pier in 2004 and the Federal Emergency Management Agency rebuilt it in concrete in 2010, thirty feet above the water, and it has taken several hurricanes since, including Sally. Its length puts anglers over deeper water than most piers reach, and a great white shark has been caught from the end of it. The county runs a park, the marine science station and a sea turtle center along the same beach
